Self-Assessed Australian Competitive Grant Income

The Department of Education and Training has been progressively rolling out a package of reforms to streamline the research block grants (RBG). As part of these reforms the department has implemented a self-assessment system for universities to determine which of their R&D income can be classified as Category 1 – Australian Competitive Grant Income for the 2019 Higher Education Research Data Collection.

The Australian Competitive Grant Income HEPs receive can be reported in Category 1 of the Higher Education Research Data Collection and is a metric used to inform the allocation of the Australian Government's RBGs.

Self-Assessment Pack

The Category 1 Assessment pack consists of three documents to assist universities to self-assess their R&D income, in conjunction with the Higher Education Research Data Collection Specifications, to determine if it can be reported as Category 1:

  1. Decision Tree – a flow chart used to determine which R&D income can be reported as Category 1, and the corresponding Category 1 sub-category.
  2. Explanatory Notes and Instructions – additional information to support the Decision Tree, including definitions of all terms used in the Decision Tree.
  3. Frequently Asked Questions – 17 FAQs to help answer potential queries.

ACGR Notes

The Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR) was centralised register that listed schemes that provided competitive research grants to HEPs. The ACGR is no longer updated.

The 2018 ACGR is the last centralised register published by the department. This register will remain publicly available to be used as a reference tool by university staff for the first year of self-assessment. Selection criteria previously used for listing are available in the 2018 ACGR Application for Listing form. Explanatory Notes are available on each criterion.
