Round two of the Community Child Care Fund will open in March 2019. This funding will help child care services in many disadvantaged regional and remote areas to improve access to early learning opportunities for families in their local communities. On 16 January 2019, the Australian Government announced an extra $10 million from the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) to upgrade six leading Australian research facilities to ensure they are at the forefront of science and technology.

The 2019 research block grants allocations have now been announced and are available to be viewed. In 2019 the Government will continue its support of universities undertaking research with funding of $1.92 billion to 42 higher education providers through two research block grants sub programs, the Research Training Program (RTP) and the Research Support Program (RSP).
$894 million through the RSP will provide support to the systemic costs of research and the $1.03 billion through the RTP will provide support to the training of the next generation of researchers and innovators.

The review found that the move to a single national regulator from previous state-based regulation has delivered benefits to the sector in reduced compliance burden, improved consistency, the confidence that stakeholders (particularly international students) have in the quality of the Australian higher education sector and the research and networks TEQSA has facilitated.
Overall, it found that the TEQSA Act is operating effectively and as intended and therefore did not recommend changes that would significantly alter the regulatory framework or the role of TEQSA. The report includes a number of recommendations that will further enhance the operation and efficiency of TEQSA and the Higher Education Standards panel.

Today the Minister announced the appointment of Emeritus Professor Coaldrake AO to lead a review of the Higher Education Provider Category Standards. Professor Coaldrake will work closely with the Higher Education Standards Panel, who will provide steering oversight to the review.

Draft 2019 HERDC Specifications
The Department of Education and Training (the department) has released the draft 2019 higher education research data collection (HERDC) Specifications for sector feedback.
The HERDC Specifications incorporate the self-assessment for Category 1 pack that was developed following consultation process from November 2017 to May 2018, taking into consideration sector feedback.

The department has published the first Progress Report on implementing the Research Training Implementation Plan (RTIP).
The RTIP, released in December 2017, responds to the Review of Australia’s Research Training System prepared by the Australian Council of Learned Academies. The RTIP includes 18 actions designed to ensure Australia’s research training system is truly world class and capable of underpinning our capacity for learned inquiry, innovation and productivity.
This first Report, developed in conjunction with responsible organisations, documents the progress made in implementing the actions to July 2018.

It was created in response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, which estimated that 60,000 people experienced institutional child sexual abuse in Australia.
Redress is an alternative to seeking compensation through the courts.
The National Redress Scheme can provide three things:
- access to counselling;
- a payment; and
- a direct personal response from the institution (e.g. an apology) for people who want it.
The scheme started on 1 July 2018 and will run for 10 years.
The Department of Education and Training has joined the Scheme.
People can apply now using an online or paper form.
Free and confidential Redress Support Services are available throughout the process.
